St John and St Elizabeth Hospital, London’s prominent charitable private hospital, is supporting the NHS by making beds, facilities and healthcare staff available to treat NHS patients in a major partnership agreed between NHS England and the nation’s independent hospitals. This collaboration will result in a significant boost to the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Caroline Fox, Chief Executive, St John and St Elizabeth Hospital said: “We are deeply proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the NHS and the wider healthcare community to help in this time of national need. We will be working closely with local NHS trusts in their efforts to treat those patients that need hospital care over the coming period. We are prepared to react quickly to the changing landscape and shifting needs of the National Health Service to ensure we can provide much-needed support to NHS colleagues, for as long as it is needed.”
Initially the support of the Hospital will be centred on providing care for NHS patients with urgent and important needs in addition to non-COVID-19 patient care.
The news comes as part of a wider agreement with the private healthcare sector to provide the NHS with urgent access to more beds, ventilators and thousands of extra clinical staff to aid the fight against COVID-19.
Under the agreement, the independent sector will reallocate much of its national hospital capacity to the NHS. It will be reimbursed, at cost – meaning no profit will be made as part of the arrangement and external auditors will verify the public funds being deployed.
Matt Hancock, Health Secretary said: “I know how hard the NHS has been working to secure extra beds and staffing.
“This is great news for the hospitals and staff doing everything they can to combat Coronavirus.”
What this means for our patients
Throughout the pandemic we have been in close contact with local NHS Trusts in order to adapt our services and the care we can provide as we help to ease the pressure off of busy NHS hospitals.
We are still accepting some private appointments and are continuing to support our local community with Outpatient and Urgent Care Centre services. All elective services are on hold as part of the NHS contract and we will look to restart these as soon as is possible.
If you would like to book an Outpatient appointment or would like to find out about the status of your appointment, please contact us by phone on: +44 (0)20 7806 4000
