What is liposuction?
Liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body using a thin tube (cannula) inserted through small incisions in the skin. The fat is loosened and suctioned out, sculpting and refining the body’s contours. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on the areas being treated. Most patients return home the same day.
Liposuction is suitable for targeting areas that have not responded to diet and exercise, including the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, back, chest and chin. Based in St John’s Wood (NW8), our specialist plastic surgeons treat patients from across London.
Who is liposuction suitable for?
Liposuction works best for people who:
- Are at or near a stable, healthy weight but have localised areas of stubborn fat that have not responded to diet and exercise
- Have good skin elasticity, as the skin needs to contract smoothly over the treated area after fat removal
- Are in good overall health and are non-smokers, or have stopped smoking in advance of surgery
- Have realistic expectations about the results
Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for weight loss. Your consultant will assess your suitability during your initial consultation.

Most patients can return home the same day or the following day. You will need to wear a compression garment over the treated areas for several weeks to reduce swelling and support the new contours as the body heals. Bruising and swelling are normal and typically subside within two to four weeks. Most patients can return to desk-based work within one to two weeks, and light exercise after four to six weeks.
The fat cells removed during liposuction are permanently gone. However, remaining fat cells in the body can still enlarge if you gain weight, so maintaining a stable weight through a healthy lifestyle will help preserve your results long term.
