Welcome to John & Lizzie’s

St John & St Elizabeth Hospital is one of the UK’s largest independent charitable hospitals. We are committed to delivering excellent care with impeccable standards. We’re proud to attract world-class consultants and dedicated nursing staff. They are, we believe, the very best in their profession.

Together we offer a welcome to all who visit us.

Our charitable status comes from our on-site St John’s Hospice, which we fund with appeals and surplus from our private healthcare services. The hospice provides free chronic and end-of-life palliative care, via inpatient, day care and community services, to over 4,500 people and their families each year, across seven boroughs.

We take great pride in our heritage. The Catholic ethos which has been our inspiration since the Hospital was founded, assures patients of a commitment to care and compassion in the delivery of their healthcare. Our aim is the same now as it was when we were first founded — to provide the highest quality healthcare for all those who seek it.

Our values

Our Values are a set of shared beliefs that we will never compromise on. They permeate through everything we do and form the foundation for why we do it. Our values summarise our culture and inform our future direction. They represent us as people and inform our collective behaviours as we interact with one another our patients, and our wider community.

The history of the Hospital

St John & Elizabeth Hospital was founded in 1856 under the care of the Sisters of Mercy, an order of nuns who worked with Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War. Both the Hospital and the Hospice take great pride in their heritage, and the Catholic ethos which they were founded upon, which assures patients of a commitment to care and compassion in the delivery of their healthcare.

The UK’s leading independent Hospital

Founded in 1856 under the care of the Sisters of Mercy, an order of nuns who worked with Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War, our Hospital pioneered the use of advanced nursing techniques to help the sick, the dying and the needy in the local community.

Now, over 165 years later, the nuns have gone, but their ethos remains at the heart of what is regarded as a unique London hospital. Although we are an innovative private hospital, we are also a registered charity. Nowhere else does the work of a private hospital invest in supporting charitable services in the way that St John & St Elizabeth Hospital does.

St John’s Hospice is the main beneficiary of St John & St Elizabeth Hospital. In addition to providing financial support, our relationship with the Hospice is crucial to the unique model of care the Hospice is able to provide their patients. All X-raysPathology, and Pharmacy are delivered on-site, enabling us to offer a less stressful experience for our patients and an immediacy of care that could not happen in most other hospices. The aim of both is the same now as it was over 165 years ago – to provide the highest quality health care for all those who seek it.
