St John & St Elizabeth Hospital launches da Vinci Xi robotic surgery as it expands complex care
St John & St Elizabeth Hospital has launched robotic-assisted surgery with the arrival of a da Vinci Xi surgical system. It is the latest step in the hospital’s plan to develop its complex care services and to offer patients more specialist treatment at its site in St John’s Wood.
The da Vinci Xi will support minimally invasive surgery across a range of specialties, including Urology, Gynaecology, General and Colorectal Surgery. The commissioning of the robotic service follows the hospital’s recently announced strategic partnership with Icon Cancer Centre to build a purpose-built cancer centre on the same campus.
Precision in the surgeon’s hands
The da Vinci Xi is manufactured by Intuitive. It gives surgeons a highly magnified, three-dimensional, high-definition view of the operating area. Working from a console in the operating theatre, the surgeon controls wristed instruments that follow their hand movements in real time and have a greater range of motion than the human hand.
The surgeon is in control throughout. The system supports their skill and judgement and lets them carry out delicate, complex procedures through small incisions.
Simon James, Chief Executive of St John & St Elizabeth Hospital, said:
“This is another statement of intent. Robotic surgery in our theatres and a new cancer centre with Icon demonstrate the hospital we are building, and the level of care we want to offer our community, with patients able to access advanced treatment in St John’s Wood with the personal care we are known for.
“Every patient we treat also supports a wider purpose. Our private healthcare services help fund St John’s Hospice, which provides free specialist palliative care to our community. As the hospital grows, so does our ability to expand the end-of-life care we provide.”
