PROMS (Patient Reported Outcome Measures)

What is PROMS or Q-PROMS

Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are condition-specific questionnaires that measure the severity of the condition from the perspective of the patient.

All patients having the following agreed procedures (below) are requested to complete a Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) questionnaire before and after their procedure. We ask patients for perspective of their health and quality of life before they have an operation and a periodically after their operation. This will help us measure and improve the quality of the treatment and care received. These PROMS procedures are:

Orthopaedics

Ophthalmology

Urology

ENT

Q-PROMs or Cosmetic Procedures

Why are we doing this?

All independent healthcare organisations are mandated by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to collect Patient Reported Outcome Measures. The CMA has approved the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) as ‘the Information Organisation’.

The Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) is the independent, government-mandated source of information about private healthcare, working to empower patients to make better-informed choices of care provider. For further information click here.

The Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) questionnaires will produce statistics that allow the independent sector to measure and improve the quality of healthcare that patients receive by different healthcare providers. It will also allow patients to compare hospitals and consultants based upon outcome data.

The Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth uses Quality Health to support it in the PROMs data collection.

How will this take place?

Before your procedure, the Admissions Department will send you the PROMs questionnaire and information leaflet with your admission pack. This will take no more than a few minutes to complete. Once you have completed the questionnaire, please bring it with you on your admission and give it to your Admission Officer or admitting Nurse.

Alternatively if you attend the pre-admission clinic prior to your surgery, bring your questionnaire with you and you can complete the questionnaire at this point.

If you are booked for a PROM procedure (hip, knee, or shoulder replacements, carpal tunnel release, cataracts, or trans-urethral resection of the prostate ) and have not received a questionnaire , please inform your Admission Officer and complete the questionnaire on admissions.

The questionnaire will ask you for a few personal details and contains a short health assessment. Your personal details will be used to send you related follow up questionnaires in the future.

The completed PROMs data will be collated by Quality Health and used to produce statistics about the quality of the hospital’s healthcare services. This statistical information will be sent to the hospital for submission to PHIN.
