Miss Joanna Franks is a Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon, specialising in cancer care, breast and reconstructive surgery. She is based at University College London NHS Hospital and also sees patients privately. She has expertise in assessing and managing all breast conditions, including both malignant and benign disease. Her particular interests are the detection of early breast cancers, oncoplastic breast conservation, neo-adjuvant strategies, mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, symmetrisation, risk reduction and screening, including if patients come from a high-risk family background.
Miss Franks qualified from Imperial College with honours and took a year out for research, funded by the Medical Research Council, which resulted in a first-class BSc in pathology with basic medical science. She also has an interest in assessment and training and has completed an MSc in Medical Education and is a regular examiner for University College Hospital and the Royal Free Medical School.
She also works with the General Medical Council, item writing and standard-setting as part of Fitness to Practice and is one of their Medical Assessors, as well as a professional reviewer for MacMillan Cancer and Trustee of Future Dreams charity, dedicated to breast cancer support and research.
