Dr Syed is a senior medical consultant specialising in Stroke medicine, Acute and General medicine and Geriatrics. He qualified from Imperial College London in 1999 and completed his specialist post-graduate training in London. He was appointed as a substantive Consultant Physician in 2008 at Barts Health NHS Trust working at both Newham University Hospital, and Royal London Hospital.
Dr Syed has been the Clinical Lead for Stroke services at Newham University Hospital for the past 10 years. During his tenure the unit has been recognised for its high performance in the national Stroke audit and has innovated multidisciplinary team working in Stroke rehabilitation. Dr Syed was also involved in setting up the nationally recognised Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) and Mechanical Thrombectomy services at Royal London Hospital.
In addition to his work within Stroke Medicine Dr Syed has also been the Clinical lead for Acute Medicine at Newham University Hospital for many years and was pivotal in establishing the Acute Assessment Unit and Ambulatory care unit.
Dr Syed is passionate about medical education, taking on a variety of roles including senior lecturer in Geriatric medicine and undergraduate lead for the fourth year Geriatric medicine module at Queen Mary University of London Medical School.
Outside of clinical work he has set up a voluntary programme that gives students the opportunity to gain work experience in healthcare settings thus allowing them to make informed decisions regarding future education and career choices. Dr Syed focuses on holistic care with an emphasis on patient empowerment.
