Book

Mr Riaz Asaria qualified from Southampton University in 1989 and began his specialist ophthalmology training in 1992, specialising in Retinal Disease. He was awarded the June Sutor Research fellowship in 1997 at Moorfields Eye Hospital, followed by a medical and surgical at Moorfields and at Bristol Eye Hospital. He was awarded the Gold Medal for his research.

He has been working as a Consultant at the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust since 2005, where he also teaches. He has developed an active research team and leads the research for ophthalmology at the Royal Free site. He is also the lead for undergraduate ophthalmology teaching at UCL Medical school and is an associate professor.

He is actively involved in humanitarian work and has helped set up surgical retina services in Iraq and other countries. He sees this part of his professional career as being both rewarding and very humbling.

Professor Azaria is available every day for advice and emergency consultations. He has worked hard to deliver a high quality service at the Hospital. He has a large team who works with him including a medical photographer, orthoptists and optometrists. He does clinics every day and is available on Sundays for emergencies.

He regularly attends meetings and is invited as a speaker with other experts. He is considered to be one of the most accomplished eye surgeons in the country through a combination of a desire to do the best possible and the volume of work he does. His patients appreciate his light hearted manner but are aware of his focus and doing the best for his patients whether in the NHS, private sector or in a war torn country.

He specialises in cataract surgery, retinal diseases, macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, trauma and eye emergencies, medical glaucoma, and general ophthalmology.

He has two secretaries based at St John & St Elizabeth Hospital who provide support to the clinic and are easily contactable.
