An experienced consultant ophthalmologist with subspecialist clinical interests in cataract surgery, retinal disease and ocular trauma.
Training and Experience: Robert qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital in London in 1987 and specialised in ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.

Robert served for 26 years in the Royal Air Force and as the lead military consultant ophthalmologist at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, Birmingham. During this time, he served as the Royal Air Force and Defence Medical Services Consultant Adviser in Ophthalmology and was deployed on active duty for a number of missions. His work with artificial vision for the war-blinded was featured on the acclaimed BBC documentary ‘Frontline Medicine’.

On retiring from the RAF in 2015 he worked as Medical Director of Moorfields Eye Hospital in Dubai, and then Medical Director for SpaMedica in Manchester. He performed over 3,000 cataract procedures last year, using the experience to achieve a complication 10x less than the national average. He co-founded Edgbaston Eye Consultants to offer a specialist intraocular lens and retinal treatment service, of a quality not available elsewhere in the UK.

Academic Achievements: His Doctorate in Medicine was from the University of Nottingham and he is widely published in the scientific press, authoring around 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He is the inventor of the Cell Penetrating Peptide technology that delivers new generation medicines to the eye.

Accolades: He was honoured to be elected as President of the Midland Ophthalmological Society in 2008, appointed as the Defence Medical Services and Royal College of Ophthalmologists Professor of Ophthalmology in 2012, then honorary Professor of Ophthalmology by the University of Birmingham in 2014. He was named as a Times newspaper top UK surgeon for all specialties in 2011 and awarded the Lady Cade Medal
