What is private ambulatory blood pressure monitoring?
Blood pressure, the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels (arteries) is a critical health indicator. If you’re… paying for yourself
Did you know you don’t need private medical insurance to come to St John & St Elizabeth Hospital? As a self-pay patient, you can access safe, outstanding quality health care at times to suit you.
For scans and tests, as well as to see most consultants, you’ll still need to be referred by a medical professional like your GP, but as a self-pay patient, the process is more straightforward. You won’t need authorisation from an insurance provider, and you’ll have greater choice of consultant and appointment times.

Your journey to understanding and managing your blood pressure begins with a consultation at our facility. During this visit, we’ll review your medical history, including any family history of heart conditions (such as if you have a direct relative with heart problems), assess your current health status, and discuss the most appropriate monitoring methods for you. Whether it’s in-office measurement or home monitoring, we ensure you’re fully informed and comfortable with your tailored plan.
Yes. Preparation for monitoring might include lifestyle adjustments or temporary changes to medication, under your doctor’s guidance. Our team will give you all the necessary instructions to help ensure your blood pressure readings are as accurate and reliable as possible.
Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by our caring staff and settled in a calm environment. The blood pressure monitor will be fitted to record your readings over 24 hours. A soft cuff is placed around your upper arm and will inflate at set intervals — typically every 30 minutes during the day and once an hour at night, unless stated otherwise by your doctor. Some people feel discomfort or numbness in the hand while the cuff inflates, but this goes away in a few seconds.
Yes. You’ll be provided with a diary sheet to record any symptoms you experience while the monitor is attached. You’ll also be given instructions on how to turn off the device when the 24-hour recording period ends, and what to avoid while the monitor is inflating — such as keeping your arm still to allow for an accurate reading.
Once the recording period is complete, you’ll turn off the monitor, remove the cuff from your arm, and return it to the hospital along with your completed diary sheet. Your results will then be reviewed by your doctor and discussed with you during a follow-up consultation. Any necessary adjustments to your care plan will be made at that time.
Understanding your blood pressure readings is just the beginning. Based on your results, we may recommend lifestyle changes, medication, or further assessments. Continued monitoring and adjustments may be needed to maintain or improve your levels. Our team will work with you to schedule follow-up visits, refine your treatment strategy, and provide support and resources to help you manage your blood pressure at home.
