Tonsil Stones, or Tonsilloliths is a common condition that can cause unpleasant bad breath. White lumps are produced from the cracks, crevices and fissures of the tonsils where food becomes trapped. Over time, through movement, the food becomes squashed together to create white lumps which eventually move to the surface. They usually have a cheesy consistency, but can sometimes be hard and stone-like. Tonsil Stones can be associated with bad breath and recurrent sore throats, or a persistently sore throat – chronic tonsillitis caused by the inflammation of the tonsils.
The London ENT Unit provides swift diagnosis and treatment for tonsil and tonsil stones removal.
Tonsil stones can be treated by many techniques, including the use of picks, cotton buds, water jets to remove them.
For patients who desire a long term cure a partial removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) aiming to vapourise away the crypts, cracks, crevices etc which are the cause of tonsil stones, whilst preserving a significant amount of tonsil tissue can be an effective long term solution. This is normally carried out under general anesthetic, but patients are still able to spend minimal time away from home or work.
The ear, nose and throat unit (ENT) can provide same-day appointments with our specialist ENT Consultants who have a wealth of experience in treating various ENT conditions.

If you are self-paying you don’t need a referral from your GP for a consultation. You can simply refer yourself* and book an appointment.
If you have health insurance (e.g. Bupa, Axa Health, Aviva), you will need to contact your insurer to get authorisation before any treatment, and in most cases you will also require a referral letter from your GP.
If you are not registered with a GP, we have an in-house private GP practice you can use. Alternatively, we can suggest the most appropriate course of action for you to take, given your location and individual circumstances.
*Please note – for investigations such as X-rays and MRIs, a referral will be required. However, we may be able to arrange this for you through our on-site private GP.
