Everything You Need to Know

The exercise stress test is a cornerstone in cardiac diagnostics, simulating physical activity conditions to monitor the heart’s response. This test is instrumental in diagnosing conditions such as coronary artery disease or arrhythmias and is vital for individuals experiencing symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations during exercise or unexplained fatigue.

You will be provided with general information when you book your appointment for the test including advice on wearing loose clothing (the shirt will be removed to expose your chest) and comfortable/running shoes (preferably trousers/shorts comfortable for walking or jogging).

At St John & Elizabeth Hospital, we understand the importance of comprehensive care. Our experienced cardiology team uses this test not only to diagnose and manage heart conditions but also to tailor safe exercise programs for those recovering from heart-related events.

Before the Test

Your pathway to an exercise stress test begins with a detailed consultation to discuss your medical history and any symptoms you may be experiencing. Preparation for the test may involve specific instructions from your cardiologist, such as medication adjustments and dietary restrictions, to ensure accurate results.

We aim to make you comfortable and informed throughout the preparation phase, providing all the necessary guidance for the day of your test.

During the Test

Conducted in a controlled environment, the exercise stress test involves walking on a treadmill while your heart rhythm, blood pressure, and breathing are monitored. Our facilities are equipped with advanced technology to ensure precise monitoring throughout the test. You’ll be supported by our caring and professional team from arrival to completion, ensuring the test is conducted safely and comfortably. The gradual increase in exercise intensity allows us to assess your heart’s performance accurately under stress.

Step-by-step procedure

  • You will be welcomed by one of our cardiac physiologists and taken to the treatment room.
  • The procedure will be explained in detail (what it entails and what to expect).
  • You will be presented with a consent form to confirm if you are happy to carry on with the test after it has been explained.
  • You will then be asked to remove clothing from your waist up (including the bra for women), you may be provided a gown to cover yourself during the procedure. You will be asked to lie down and relax as small, sticky electrodes are attached to your chest.
  • A recording of your blood pressure will be taken at this point, every 2-3 minutes during exercise and every 2 minutes after exercise.
  • You will be asked to walk on the treadmill at increasing intensities (increasing speed and incline) until one of the criteria to stop is reached (this will be explained in the beginning).
  • You will be monitored for a few minutes after exercising to ensure you feel well before leaving.

After the Test

Post-test care at St John & Elizabeth Hospital is tailored to each individual, ensuring you receive the support and information you need. Our cardiology team will review and discuss your test results with you, providing clear explanations and next steps if further investigation or treatment is required.

Recovery from the test is usually straightforward, with most individuals able to resume their daily activities immediately. We’ll provide all the necessary aftercare advice and support, focusing on your well-being and health.
