Everything You Need to Know

For individuals battling persistent sinus infections, breathing difficulties, and other related symptoms, FESS offers a targeted approach to alleviate these issues. By employing advanced endoscopic techniques, our surgeons gain direct access to the sinuses, allowing for precise removal of blockages, without the need for external incisions. This results in fewer complications, reduced recovery time, and improved outcomes, making FESS a preferred option for many of our patients.

If you’re navigating the discomforts of chronic sinusitis and seeking solutions, FESS may provide the relief you’ve been longing for. Our team at St John & Elizabeth Hospital is here to guide you through the process, from initial consultation to post-operative care, ensuring a smooth and supportive journey back to optimal health.

Before Surgery

Your FESS journey at St John & Elizabeth Hospital begins with a comprehensive consultation with one of our expert ENT surgeons. This initial step is crucial for understanding your specific condition and determining the most effective treatment plan. During this session, we will review your medical history, symptoms, and any previous treatments for sinus issues. Pre-operative assessments may include imaging studies, such as CT scans, to provide detailed visuals of your sinus anatomy, facilitating precise surgical planning.

Preparation for your FESS procedure is straightforward, yet tailored to your unique needs. Our team will guide you through specific pre-operative instructions, which may include ceasing certain medications and starting a nasal wash regimen. We are dedicated to ensuring you are fully informed and comfortable with the planned approach, ensuring a smooth and anxiety-free lead-up to your surgery.

During Surgery

Undergoing FESS at St John & Elizabeth Hospital is a process marked by comfort and the highest standards of care. From the moment you arrive, our dedicated team is on hand to ensure you feel supported and at ease.

Arrival and Preparation

Upon your arrival, our friendly staff will welcome you and take you through the final pre-surgery steps. This includes a review of your medical history and a briefing on what to expect during the procedure. You’ll then be comfortably settled in the state-of-the-art surgical suite prepared for your surgery.

Anaesthesia

FESS is typically performed under general anaesthesia, which ensures you are asleep and pain-free throughout the surgery. Our experienced anaesthetists administer the anaesthesia and constantly monitor your comfort and safety.

The Surgery

The FESS procedure is minimally invasive, utilising a nasal endoscope to access and correct sinus blockages. Your ENT surgeon will carefully remove any obstructions, such as polyps or diseased tissue, enhancing sinus drainage and function. The precision of the technique minimises tissue disruption, leading to fewer complications and a quicker recovery.

Immediate Post-Operative Care

Immediately following the surgery, you will be taken to a recovery area where our team closely monitors your initial recovery. Pain management and nausea control are our priorities, ensuring your comfort as you awaken from anaesthesia.

After Surgery

Recovery following FESS is designed to be as smooth and comfortable as possible. Here’s what you can expect during the post-operative phase:

Immediate Post-Procedure Care

Our nursing team will provide detailed aftercare instructions specific to your surgery. This may include pain management strategies, nasal care practices to prevent infection, and signs to watch for that might necessitate a call to our team.

Recovery at Home

Most patients are surprised by the rapidity of their recovery, with many resuming normal activities within a few days. However, it’s important to avoid strenuous activities and follow our guidance on nasal irrigation and medication during the initial recovery period.

Follow-Up Visits

We will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your healing and evaluate the success of the surgery. These visits are an opportunity to address any concerns and ensure your sinuses are functioning well post-operatively.

How to pay for your treatment

If you’re… paying for yourself

Did you know you don’t need private medical insurance to come to St John & St Elizabeth Hospital? As a self-pay patient, you can access safe, outstanding quality health care at times to suit you.

For scans and tests, as well as to see most consultants, you’ll still need to be referred by a medical professional like your GP, but as a self-pay patient, the process is more straightforward. You won’t need authorisation from an insurance provider, and you’ll have greater choice of consultant and appointment times.

If you’re… insured

St John & St Elizabeth Hospital is approved by all major medical insurance companies. If you have a personal private health insurance policy, or your company provide it for you, you can use it to pay for your care from your initial consultation through to treatment, surgery and aftercare such as physiotherapy. Not all private health insurance plans cover the same things. It’s very important to check exactly what you are covered for with your insurance provider.
