Read time: 2 mins

A consultant urologist from St John & St Elizabeth Hospital has taken part in a landmark international surgical event, demonstrating advanced techniques to a global audience of specialists.

In 2026, London hosted Europe’s largest urological event, the 41st Annual European Association of Urology Congress (EAU26). Bringing together thousands of healthcare professionals from across the world, the congress provides a platform for medical specialists, researchers and scientists to present the latest advances in urological care. It also plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of urologists through the sharing of knowledge, research and clinical expertise.

Mr Leye Ajayi, Consultant Urologist, played a leading role in EAU26 2026. As part of the programme, Mr Ajayi organised and performed live surgery at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust on Saturday 14 March, with the procedure broadcast in real time to an audience of over 5,000 urologists at ExCeL London.

The event brought together five internationally renowned urologists, with live surgical sessions showcasing a range of advanced procedures, including Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery (ECIRS), and Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS), using the latest surgical technologies and laser systems.

Mr Ajayi was the organiser of this event and himself performed a live RIRS procedure, demonstrating precision techniques in the management of kidney stones using advanced endoscopic equipment and laser technology.

Reflecting on the event, Mr Ajayi said:
“It was a privilege to collaborate with world-leading colleagues and to contribute to an event that supports the sharing of innovation and expertise in urology. Live surgery offers a unique opportunity to demonstrate best practice and advance standards of care globally.”

Mr Ajayi added:
“My sincere thanks go to my colleagues and the theatre team, whose dedication and professionalism made this complex event possible. Their commitment ensured the highest standards of patient care while delivering an exceptional educational experience.”

St John & St Elizabeth Hospital is proud to support clinicians who are actively shaping the future of patient care through innovation, collaboration, and excellence in their field.
