Private Transoesophageal Echocardiogram in London
A Transoesophageal Echocardiogram, or TOE, is a specialised heart ultrasound scan used to assess the heart in detail. Unlike a standard echocardiogram performed on the chest, a TOE involves gently passing a small ultrasound probe down the oesophagus, which sits close to the heart.
This allows your cardiologist to obtain clearer, more detailed images of the heart’s valves, chambers and structures, supporting accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
At St John & St Elizabeth Hospital, our private cardiology service in London provides consultant-led care with access to modern imaging technology and a dedicated endoscopy suite. Patients benefit from a comfortable private ward environment, expert monitoring throughout the procedure, and rapid access to follow-up care.
Our cardiologists and specialist teams are committed to delivering safe, high-quality cardiac diagnostics, helping you gain clarity and reassurance about your heart health.
Why might I need this test?
Your doctor may recommend a TOE to:
- Obtain clearer images when a standard echocardiogram is inconclusive
- Assess heart valves and structures in greater detail
- Detect blood clots within the heart
- Investigate the cause of stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
- Diagnose infections of the heart, such as endocarditis
- Guide or plan certain cardiac procedures

Frequently asked questions about TOE
Your TOE will be carried out by an experienced cardiologist in a safe, monitored environment. You will be admitted to the ward before the procedure, where your consultant will explain the test and answer any questions.
During the procedure, a local anaesthetic spray is used to numb the back of your throat. You may also be given sedation to help you relax. A small, flexible probe is then gently passed down the oesophagus, allowing ultrasound images of your heart to be recorded.
The procedure usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes, although you should allow extra time for preparation and recovery (you will likely stay in the hospital for up to 2 hours).
A TOE is a commonly performed and generally safe procedure. You will be closely monitored throughout, including your heart rate, oxygen levels and blood pressure. Complications are uncommon, although you may experience a mild sore throat afterwards, which usually settles within a day or two.
To ensure your test can be carried out safely:
- Do not eat for at least 6 hours before your appointment
- You may drink small amounts of clear fluids up to 2 hours before the test, unless advised otherwise
- Follow any medication instructions from your referring doctor
- Wear comfortable clothing
- If you are having sedation, you must arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you home.
- You must not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for 24 hours after the procedure.
After your TOE, you will be monitored on the ward while the sedation wears off. Your throat may feel numb at first, and our team will let you know when it is safe to eat and drink.
Most patients go home the same day. Your results will be sent to your consultant, and you should arrange a follow-up appointment to discuss the findings and any next steps.
