New colorectal laser enhances treatment outcomes and patient safety

Read time: 3 mins

Last month (March 2024), Mr Massimo Varcada, General & Colorectal Surgeon, used the hospital’s new diode laser for the first time, improving treatment outcomes for patients.

The laser, which replaces traditional surgical tools, can be used to quickly and safely treat pilonidal sinus, anal fistulahaemorrhoids, and anal intraepithelial neoplasia (pre-cancerous changes in the skin caused by exposure to human papilloma virus (HPV).

The laser has multiple benefits:

  • No incisions are required, meaning patients will remain scar-free after the procedure.
  • It is safer for patients with less down-time, faster recovery rates, and low risk of complications.
  • Patients feel less pain during and after treatment.
  • Results in lower disease recurrence rates – as high as 85% for pilonidal sinus!
  • Treatments can be performed more quickly, many in under 30 minutes, and patients can go home the same day.

Another advantage of the laser is that it seals off the blood vessels as it cuts, resulting in very little bleeding. The slim tip of the laser is also very precise and allows surgeons to finely target the necessary area without damaging the mucosa, sphincter, or surrounding structures. This is particularly important in a delicate area such as the anal canal.

We asked Mr Varcada why he chose to offer laser as a treatment method for patients:

“There is extensive scientific evidence supporting the application of lasers in coloproctology – I have been positively impressed with laser as a growing and highly requested colorectal treatment modality, with crucial indications in the treatment of haemorrhoids, pilonidal sinus, anal fistula and anal warts (viral changes). It has shown to result in short recovery times, a quick return to regular activity, and a low risk of complications.”

The hospital has acquired the laser from Edge Medical, one of the UK’s fastest growing medical distributors, which provides a comprehensive portfolio of cutting-edge technology to clinicians and patients. Max Littlewood from Edge Medical’s Pain Division said, “We are truly excited to partner with St John & St Elizabeth Hospital to support them in providing patients with the best care the industry has to offer.”

We look forward to many more patients benefiting from this exciting technology!
