Professor Ian McDermott

Ian is a full-time private knee surgeon based in Central London. Ian has been a pioneer in the UK of cutting-edge knee surgery, and he has specific expertise in:

• Meniscal repair
• Meniscal replacement (meniscal transplantation)
• Single-stage AMIC articular cartilage grafting
• ‘Biological Knee Replacement’ / Reconstruction
• Ligament reconstructions using donor tendons (allografts)
• Realignment osteotomy using computer-generated 3D-printed guides and custom-made plates
• Partial and Total Knee Replacements
• Custom-made knee replacement surgery.

Ian was the founder and is a Past President of the UK Biological Knee Society. He was the first surgeon in the UK to perform a Conformis custom-made knee replacement (back in 2012), he is one of the top Conformis users in the UK, and he is part of Conformis’s UK Surgical Visitation Program, teaching other knee surgeons the surgical techniques for implanting custom-made knees.

Ian is one of the leading figures in the UK for meniscal allograft transplantation and also for AMIC single-stage articular cartilage grafting in the knee and was the youngest ever surgeon to be elected as a Council Member and Trustee of The Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Ian is the Co-Vice-Chairman of The Federation of Independent Practitioners Organisations, a Trustee of The Sports Orthopaedics Research Foundation and has been appointed as Professor Emeritus at London Southbank University.
