November is Men’s Health Awareness Month, widely known as Movember. This is a good time for men to take stock of their health and have a (potentially/likely) delayed check-up with their GP.
Dr Adam Wander gives his expert opinion on men’s health, focusing on three key areas men should stay on top of all year round, not just in November!
“Men often overlook their health. This can lead to delayed diagnosis and inadequate management of conditions. Men’s Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the importance of self-care, regular check-ups, and seeking help when needed.”
There are three key issues which can affect men:
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers amongst men worldwide, and typically affects men over 50. When detected early, it’s highly treatable. During one my men’s health consultations, I take a detailed medical history and if indicated, I’llperform a prostate-health exam as well. This includes a PSA (prostate specific antigen) test – a routine blood test that can help detect prostate cancer early.
Testicular cancer is most common among those aged 15 to 44. Regular self-examination is an easy and effective way to identify testicular abnormalities and it can make all the difference. I provide comprehensive guidance on self-examination and when to seek medical attention. If you notice any unusual lumps or changes, click here to book an appointment
Mental Health, which includes, but is not limited to stress, anxiety, depression, can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender. Men often hesitate to seek help for mental health issues for several reasons, and I’ve noticed this is often due to societal expectations of stoicism and self-reliance. Consequently, conditions like depression and anxiety often go undiagnosed and untreated.
A men’s health consultation with me goes beyond physical health. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious or depressed, I encourage you to talk openly with friends, family, or a mental health expert. If you need some guidance on where to access support, I can suggest useful self-help tools, recommend a professional, or point you in the direction of support groups or online resources.
Men’s Health is a crucial issue. By recognising the importance of early detection and promoting discussion of issues, men can lead healthier and happier lives.
So, step up, take charge, and be the healthiest version of yourself! It’s time for a change in attitude regarding self-care and health, and it all starts with recognising the importance of early detection.
This 30-minute consultation will start with a detailed history, a physical exam including pulse, blood pressure, heart and lung check as well as a BMI check and urine check.
Our hospital also offers a comprehensive range of blood tests, including kidney, liver, thyroid and prostate health, cholesterol, and blood count. Other tests such as ECG and scans are possible if required.
You will receive a follow-up, which can be requested as a face to face or telephone consultation, or via email.
Dr Adam Wander is available on Monday mornings, Wednesday evenings and alternative Saturday mornings.
