Epididymal Cyst Removal

Epididymal cyst removal is a surgical procedure used to treat fluid-filled sacs, known as epididymal cysts, which develop in the epididymis – the tube behind the testicle that stores and carries sperm. These cysts are generally benign and painless, but they can cause discomfort or concern if they grow larger. Removal is recommended when the cyst causes pain, becomes large, or affects daily activities. The procedure involves excising the cyst to restore comfort and prevent further issues.

Epididymal cysts are quite common and often go unnoticed. However, if they become symptomatic or are mistakenly thought to be a more serious condition, surgical removal can provide relief and peace of mind.

Everything You Need to Know About Epididymal Cyst

Epididymal cyst removal is a minor surgical procedure that effectively eliminates cysts from the epididymis, resolving discomfort and preventing further complications. These cysts can develop for various reasons, including blockages within the epididymis or trauma to the scrotum. While many cysts remain small and painless, larger cysts may lead to discomfort, especially when sitting, walking, or during sexual activity.

Surgical removal is generally recommended when the cyst becomes large and is causing pain or discomfort, or if there is uncertainty about the diagnosis. Small cysts typically do not require intervention unless they cause significant symptoms. Epididymal cysts do not pose a significant health risk but may interfere with normal function and comfort.

Key benefits of epididymal cyst removal include:

  • Symptom Relief: Removing the cyst eliminates pain and swelling in the scrotum.
  • Improved Mobility and Comfort: Relieving the pressure caused by the cyst makes everyday activities more comfortable.
  • Restoration of Confidence: Surgery can restore the natural appearance of the scrotum, improving body confidence.
  • Prevention of Complications: Removing the cyst ensures it won’t grow larger or cause any future issues.

Before Surgery

Before the epididymal cyst removal, you will attend an initial consultation with a specialist surgeon who will assess the cyst and discuss your symptoms. During this consultation, your medical history will be reviewed, and a physical examination will be conducted to confirm the diagnosis.

Health Assessment and Diagnostic Tests

A thorough health assessment will be carried out to ensure you are fit for surgery. Your surgeon may also order an ultrasound to get a clear view of the cyst’s size, location, and characteristics. This imaging will help differentiate the cyst from other scrotal masses, such as tumours or varicoceles.
If you are on any medications, particularly blood thinners, your surgeon will discuss whether you need to adjust or pause them in the days leading up to the procedure.

Pre-Procedure Instructions

To ensure the best outcome from your surgery, you will be given specific instructions in the days leading up to the procedure:

  • Fasting: You will need to avoid eating or drinking anything from midnight on the day of your surgery.
  • Medication Adjustments: Your surgeon will advise on whether you need to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners or anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Lifestyle Advice: To aid your recovery, it’s important to stay hydrated and maintain a healthy diet. Avoid smoking before surgery, as this can impair healing.

During the Surgery

Epididymal cyst removal is a relatively simple procedure performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the size and location of the cyst, as well as patient preference.

Anaesthesia

Most epididymal cyst removals are carried out under local anaesthesia, where the scrotum is numbed to prevent pain during the procedure. In some cases, general anaesthesia may be used, particularly if the cyst is large or multiple cysts are being removed.

Surgical Procedure

Epididymal cyst surgery begins with a small incision in the scrotum, through which the surgeon will make to carefully remove the cyst. There is a potential risk of damaging the vas deferens during the procedure, which can lead to fertility issues. If the cyst is attached to the epididymis, part of the epididymis may also be removed to ensure complete excision. Dissolvable stitches are typically used to close the incision, minimising scarring and promoting healing.

The surgery usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes, and you will be monitored throughout to ensure your safety and comfort.

After the Surgery

After the procedure, you will be moved to a recovery area where our team will monitor your progress. You can usually return home the same day once the effects of the anaesthesia have worn off.

Immediate Post-Operative Care and Pain Relief Medication

You may experience some swelling, bruising, or discomfort in the scrotum for a few days after the surgery. Pain relief medication will be provided to manage any discomfort. You will also be given instructions on how to care for the incision site and what to expect during the initial recovery period. Urological surgeons will provide expert care and support during the recovery process.

It’s important to avoid heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, and sexual activity for at least two weeks to allow the incision to heal properly. Wearing supportive underwear can help reduce swelling and improve comfort during recovery.

Follow-Up Care, Recovery, and Wearing Supportive Underwear

A follow-up appointment will be scheduled approximately two weeks after the surgery to check that the incision is healing and there are no signs of infection or complications. Your surgeon will also discuss preventive measures and provide advice on when it is safe to resume normal activities, including exercise and sexual activity.
