What Is an Echocardiogram?

These sound waves produced by the machine bounce off the heart muscle, heart walls, heart’s chambers, and heart valves, allowing healthcare professionals to assess heart function and heart’s structure in real time.

How Is an Echocardiogram Done on a Woman? (Step by Step)
Step 1: Preparing for the Test
When you arrive at the cardiology clinic, a healthcare professional (cardiac physiologist) will explain the procedure and review the reason for your investigation (included in the referral request).You’ll be asked to change into a hospital gown, covering the upper half of your body. This allows access to the chest while maintaining modesty.
Step 2: Positioning on the Exam Table
You’ll lie on an exam table, usually on your left side. This position helps bring the heart closer to the chest wall, improving image quality and allowing better views of the heart
Breast tissue is gently positioned as needed by the clinician to avoid unnecessary pressure or exposure.
Step 3: Using the Ultrasound Probe
A small amount of gel is applied to the chest. The ultrasound probe is then placed against the skin and moved across different areas. You may feel slight pressure, but the test is not painful. The probe sends out ultrasound waves, and the machine uses these to create images and create moving images of your heart.
These images show pictures of your heart, including the heart muscle, heart walls, heart valves, and blood vessels, helping identify issues such as poor blood flow or heart valve disease.
Step 4: During the Scan

Step 5: After the Echocardiogram
Once complete, the gel is wiped away and you can get dressed. There is no recovery time, and you can return to normal physical activity straight away.
When Will I Get My Echocardiogram Results?
After your echocardiogram test, the images are reviewed by the cardiac physiologist who is trained in cardiac imaging and then a heart doctor ( cardiologist) will review the scan and report.
Because the test creates detailed pictures of your heart and requires review the results are not given immediately on the day of the scan.
