Hip Bursitis

A bursa is a fluid-filled sack, positioned over a joint and under the skin, which provides a protective layer between your bones and tendons. Bursitis is when this becomes inflamed, restricting the natural movement of that joint until the friction between the tendons and the bursa causes more irritation resulting in inflammation.

Symptoms of bursitis

  • Swelling
  • Pulses of pain
  • Inflammation
  • Stiffness in the joints

Diagnosis of hip bursitis

One of our Consultants will take an initial fluid sample know as ‘aspiration’ to test the level of bacteria present in the bursa. This will determine any underlying conditions causing the inflammation. If the doctor decides that further testing is necessary they may send you to our imaging department for an MRI or X-Ray scan, or to our pathology department for a blood test.

Treatment of hip bursitis

  • If a bursa is found to be not infected then we may refer you on to one of our physiotherapists who will recommend massage therapy techniques as well as plenty of rest, ice and elevation.
  • If a bursa is found to be infected you may be prescribed a course of antibiotics. If this treatment isn’t proven to be effective, they may suggest a Bursectomy (surgical removal of the bursa).

Contact us

To ask a question about hip arthritis or to book an appointment, contact our specialist team available Monday – Friday 8am – 6pm and on Saturday from 9am – 1pm. Our hip specialists team have a dedicated and caring approach and will seek to find you the earliest appointment possible with the correct specialist for your needs.

If you are self-paying you don’t need a referral from your GP. You can simply refer yourself and book an appointment. If you have medical insurance (e.g. Bupa, Axa PPP, Aviva), you will need to contact your insurer for authorisation for any treatment and, in most cases, you will require a referral letter from your GP.

If you do not have a GP, then we have an in-house private GP practice that you can use. Alternatively we can suggest the most appropriate course of action for you to take, given your location and individual circumstance.
