The labrum is the cartilage lining of the hip’s ball and socket joint. It helps stabilize the joint through its range of everyday movements. It can become torn (known as a labral tear) which causes pain in the hip.
Trauma to the hip from a sports injury, a fall or a car accident can cause a labral tear. Another source is repeated twisting or pivoting motions common in golf that causes extra wear and tear. But some people are born with structural abnormalities in their hips which, over time, accelerate the degeneration of the labrum and increase the incidence of tears.
A locking, clicking or caching sensation in the hip joint is a common symptom with hip pain radiating from the hip into the groin. A stiffness and limited range of motion in the joint may develop.
A specialist will test the range of motion in your hip and study the biomechanics of your walk. X-rays will reveal damage and structural influences in the joint.
Our Physiotherapists can devise exercise regimes to maximize the range of hip motion to improve strength and stability but arthroscopic surgery may be recommended to repair or remove the torn tissue. This is normally a day procedure with anchors placed in the bone to connect the labrum back in position and allow it to heal in the right location.

If you are self-paying you don’t need a referral from your GP for a consultation. You can simply refer yourself* and book an appointment.
If you have health insurance (e.g. Bupa, Axa Health, Aviva), you will need to contact your insurer to get authorisation before any treatment, and in most cases you will also require a referral letter from your GP.
If you are not registered with a GP, we have an in-house private GP practice you can use. Alternatively, we can suggest the most appropriate course of action for you to take, given your location and individual circumstances.
*Please note – for investigations such as X-rays and MRIs, a referral will be required. However, we may be able to arrange this for you through our on-site private GP.
